AntiGPT

Humanize AI-assisted essays and coursework

If you used an AI assistant to outline or draft an essay, the result usually reads as smooth, even, and slightly anonymous. Tutors notice, and so do classifiers. AntiGPT rewrites the draft so it carries the rhythm and word choices of a person, then shows you a detector score so you can judge whether it now reads like you. This page explains how to use it well for coursework, and where the line is.

A note on academic integrity

Read your institution's policy before you start. Many universities allow AI assistance for brainstorming, structure, or language support and require you to declare it; some forbid it for assessed work entirely. AntiGPT is a writing tool. It does not make work yours if it is not, and it does not remove the obligation to disclose assistance where your rules require it. Use it to make sentences you understand and stand behind read naturally, not to disguise work you did not do.

Practically, the safest workflow is the one where you remain the author: you decide the argument, you check every claim against your sources, and you can explain any sentence in a viva. The rewrite then does what a good editor does: it removes the machine's tell-tale evenness without changing what you meant.

What changes when you humanize an essay

AI drafts tend to have uniform sentence length, a fondness for triads ("clear, concise, and compelling"), hedged openers ("It is important to note that"), and abstract nouns where a concrete example would land better. Detectors are largely measuring that uniformity: how predictable each next word is, and how little the rhythm varies. Humanizing breaks the pattern: shorter sentences next to longer ones, plainer verbs, a specific example instead of a generality, and the occasional deliberate fragment.

The Enhanced mode is the right default for academic prose: it changes structure enough to matter while keeping the argument and terminology intact. Aggressive rewrites more freely and suits early drafts; Basic is for light polishing of text that is already mostly yours. Pair any mode with the University or Doctorate readability setting so vocabulary stays at the level your marker expects.

How to work through a long essay

Work paragraph by paragraph or section by section rather than pasting the whole essay at once. Each request has a per-request word cap on your plan, and shorter passes give you more control: you can accept the rewrite of one paragraph, reject another, and keep your own phrasing where it was already good. On Pro and Max the app chunks long text at paragraph boundaries for you and stitches the result back together.

After each pass, run the detector on the rewritten paragraph and compare it with the original. You are looking for two things: a lower estimated-AI score, and, more importantly, a paragraph you would be happy to read aloud. If the score dropped but the sentence now sounds odd, re-humanize it or edit by hand. The tool is there to help you write, not to replace your judgement.

Citations, quotes and technical terms

Quotations and citations should not be rewritten. Paste the body text around them, and reinsert quotes and reference markers afterwards. Technical terms usually survive a rewrite, but check any discipline-specific phrase ("statistically significant", "marginal utility", "free indirect discourse") has not been paraphrased into something looser. The readability setting helps here: University and Doctorate keep specialist vocabulary in place.

Finally, keep your own final pass. Reading the essay once more, end to end, is the step that makes it genuinely yours, and it is where the last few machine-sounding lines get caught.

A worked example

Before

It is important to note that climate change represents one of the most significant challenges facing humanity today. There are many factors that contribute to this issue, including industrial emissions, deforestation, and transportation. Governments, businesses, and individuals all have a crucial role to play in addressing this pressing global concern.

After

Climate change is the largest problem we have collectively chosen not to solve. The causes are not mysterious: factories, cleared forests, and the daily commute. What is contested is who moves first, and my argument in this essay is that waiting for governments has cost us a decade.

The rewrite drops the hedged opener and the three-item list, replaces abstractions with concrete images, varies sentence length and, crucially, commits to a position, which is what an essay is for.

Detector scores are estimates from third-party classifiers and change as those tools update. No text can be guaranteed to pass any detector. Use this to improve your writing, and follow your institution's or employer's rules on AI use.

Questions

Will my tutor know I used an AI tool?

A rewrite changes how text reads, not whether assistance was used. If your institution requires disclosure, disclose it. The detector score is an estimate, never a guarantee of any outcome.

Does it keep my references?

Rewrite the body text and reinsert citations and quotations afterwards; they should not be paraphrased.

Which mode for essays?

Enhanced with University or Doctorate readability is the usual choice. Aggressive suits rough first drafts.
